Academic Support is committed to serving all Auburn University students. We want coaching to be a warm and supportive space. During these meetings, everyone is expected to follow student conduct standards and the values of the Auburn Creed.

Academic Coaching starts with a 60-minute intake meeting, followed by three to five 30-minute coaching sessions. The program is designed to help you build skills over a full semester.

We encourage you to keep working with the same coach for all your appointments. You're welcome to return to coaching anytime.

  • Show up to your appointments. Visit Make an Appointment for details on scheduling.

  • Be yourself. This program is built around you, and we want it to feel like a safe, honest space.

  • Be open with your coach about your goals and challenges. Students who go to coaching tend to earn higher grades than they did before.

Academic Coaches work with students to reach their academic and professional goals. They teach strategies, study skills, and habits that work for any subject. Coaching isn't the same as tutoring in a specific subject, but coaches can still help you build skills for a particular class. They can also help you find course resources and communicate with your professors.

Academic Support also offers other ways to improve your grades. Study Partners Peer Tutoring provides free peer tutoring for many core and major gateway courses, and Supplemental Instruction (SI) offers active review sessions for historically difficult courses at AU.

More support offerings at the University are detailed on toward the bottom of the Study Partners Peer Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) webpages. For example, the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering offers tutoring. The College of Sciences and Mathematics has a drop-in tutoring center. And for help with writing projects, the Miller Writing Center offers free consultations for any kind of writing.

Academic Coaches are graduate students who are trained to help other students do well in school. Each coach trains for more than 35 hours every year. Training starts before the semester begins and keeps going all year. Coaches earn Level I, II, and III certifications as CRLA-Certified Peer Educators.

Training covers things like: how coaching works, how people learn, teaching and listening skills, and how to connect students with helpful resources. Coaches also learn how to help students set goals and make plans to reach them. They do this in a friendly, welcoming way.

Coaches are observed and given feedback regularly to help them improve.

Coaches are provided access to helpful tools, a mentor called a Coach Buddy, monthly workshops, and a team of coworkers who share ideas and give feedback. All Academic Support employees are also supported as they build their career skills.
