Undergraduate student employees serve as Peer Tutors, SI Leaders, Accountability Group Leaders, and Front Desk Representatives throughout the year in Academic Support. Some students work in Academic Support for up to four years! Improve Communication Skills
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders, Peer Tutors, and Academic Coaches report significant gains in their communication skills as a result of their employment in Academic Support. Communication is a top skill employers seek in entry-level professionals.
I have improved my ability to communicate clearly and effectively through this position by learning how to adapt to different learning styles and types of people. By learning how to adapt, I feel that I can better work with a wider variety of people in my professional career.
Increase Leadership and Facilitation Skills
Academic Support student employees build a foundation of leadership skills through their employment in Academic Support as peer leaders. Student employees’ leadership skills are strengthened with program-level trainings and by modeling to other students the attitudes, habits, and skills for student success.
Being a part of the team as an SI leader has strengthened my leadership skills
significantly; I not only feel more confident and capable in what I do as a leader, but I am more comfortable leading and being put in front of crowds!
Promote Critical Thinking Skills
Academic Support peer leaders identify the unique needs of students, and in return, respond based on the context of those needs. Working in Academic Support provides opportunity for students’ critical thinking skills to grow and strengthen.
I think my critical thinking skills have improved after tutoring subjects that I hadn't taken in a few semesters. Since I'm not an expert in all of the subjects I tutor, it has taken some problem solving and critical thinking to not only recall the material myself, but help other students.
Identify Areas for Self-Development
Academic Support program staff cultivate an environment that fosters self-directed learning and growth by providing learning tools and life skills to help students succeed.
A powerful learning experience I had was leading my first-ever test review session. It was the first time I truly felt confident in my ability to lead a large group, and that confidence has carried over into other areas of my life—both in school and in professional settings.
